Altered Jean Skirts

Have I mentioned that I am the proud mama of a beautiful shiny black Bernina sewing machine? She needs a name - any suggestions? I love her to pieces & she helped me make these today (the girls helped too)

I have a friend who made some great bleached jean jackets & I saw an article in an old magazine about some journal skirts with stamped stories & pictures all over them. I sort of combined the two and came up with this idea for my girlies.

I'm not quite finished, I still have some more hand embroidery I'd like to do and I'll add some more trim & buttons here & there. But I have to finish them tomorrow, because
#1 & 2 can't wait to wear them to school on Monday.

I love that they're not all embarassed that I like to make them clothes - Can you hear me singing Dolly Parton, Coat of Many Colors?

This one turned out very white...the fabric was more cotton than denim and the bleach just soaked in everywhere. But the ruffles are made from thick vintage lace.

I was very happy to find that my ruffler foot fits my new machine, If you've never used one of these, they're wonderful! I think it's actually called shirring - but you can set the foot to pleat or gather, and if you change the stitch size, the gather gets tighter or looser.
And here's the new machine, isn't it cute? My husbands grandma went to a quilt show last month and entered a drawing for it in my name. We were all so excited!

Years ago my grandmother would make my cousins and I skirts & dresses with ruffles like those. I wish she would have taught us to sew back then.
